The French-Zambian Chamber of Commerce (FZCC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, the French Embassy in Zambia and the Institute for Finance and Economics (IFE), held a conference on “Renewable Energy in Zambia” at Mulungushi International Conference Centre on 27th-28th October 2020.
The two-day conference was not only the opportunity to assess the potential of the renewable energy sector in Zambia and its prospects in the near future, but also to highlight the achievements of French and Zambian companies involved in renewables. It allowed the private sector to interact with public stakeholders and debate on specific topics through thematic workshops.
The event attracted both local and international companies who expressed keen interest in investing in the energy sector in Zambia.
Both the opening ceremony and the inauguration of the sponsors’ exhibition stands were presided over by the Zambian Minister of Energy, Hon. Matthew Nkhuwa.
It was attended by 150 people, some of them having flown from South Africa and France.
The Zambian Ambassador to France, H.E. Dr. Kaseba Sata, came all the way from Paris to honor us with her presence. She was sharing the high table seats with Hon. Minister of Energy, H.E. Sylvain Berger French Ambassador to Zambia, and H.E. Jacek Jankowski European Union Ambassador to Zambia.
In his speech, the Minister of Energy focused on the willingness of the Zambian government to support the energy sector in Zambia:
“The government of Zambia pledges to continue to support all private companies, French and Zambian, in further development of the energy sector by investment policy that allows for the identification of investment opportunities in renewable energy”.
In these uncertain times of Covid-19 pandemic, the organization of such an event was more than usual a challenge.
This high-level meeting was made possible thanks to the full support and commitment of all our sponsors:
EDF, NEOEN, LAFARGE, FNB, ENGIE POWER CORNER, TOTAL, AFRICA GREENCO, COPPERBELT ENERGY CORPORATION, GDS INTERNATIONAL (with EARTH TECHNOLOGIES & BLUE SOLUTIONS) and RAZEL BEC.
Technical support was provided by our partners:
MANIC CREATIVES and LIQUID TELECOM.
The event succeeded in gathering business top executives, officials from the Ministry of Energy and Zambian Institutions, representatives from international organizations such as the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the European Union Delegation to Zambia (EU).
Among the participants were also FZCC board members, members and guests:
Bollore Transport & Logistics, Bureau Veritas, Saro Agro Industrial, Musa Dudhia & Co, D.H. Engineering, Agova, Rugare Enterprise, Moira Mukuka Legal Practitioners, Kasanka National Park, Voltalia, Kalahari GeoEnergy, Standard Microgrid, Synwave Power Zambia, Families Are Nations, Mphepo Power, Upepo Energy.
All the companies sponsoring the conference were able to make a presentation of their renewable activities in front of the audience.
Six thematic workshops were conducted over the 2 days:
FINANCING, SOLAR/On and Off-Grid, BIOENERGY, HYDRO, WIND, and REGULATION / On & Off-Grid.
Each thematic workshop focused on a specific area of discussion. The workshops started with a series of presentations; virtual as well as onsite presentations. This was followed by an open discussion with panelists and finally closed with a question and answer session.
